Film Review: Graphic Sexual Horror (2009)

SYNOPSIS:

Graphic Sexual Horror takes a peek behind the terrifying facade of
Insex.com, the most notorious of bondage web sites, exploring the dark
mind of its artistic creator and asking hard questions about personal
responsibility. Original Insex footage, behind-the-scenes interactions,
and interviews with PD, models, members, and staff
reveal deep fascinations with bondage and sadomasochism that run
parallel, and in fact become irreversibly entwined with the lure of
money.

REVIEW:

A title like “Graphic Sexual Horror” is bound to gain your attention
whether your into it or not. Though with the demented comes relief in a
film that will be sure to drum up mixed feelings. For starters, this is
a true documentary …a well made one and an extremely interesting one
but a documentary none-the-less. The focal point is a retired site
named Insex.com. One of the most controversial and notorious (for that
matter) websites in existence (It has since been sold to a Dutch
company and is most likely under a different direction of sorts)
However, while this site was in full throttle, it was reported to have
over 35,000 members paying $60 per month to have access to its wide
variety of debauchery, horror porn and bondage torture materials. Now
if you do the math on that it comes in at over 2 million dollars per
month! Quite a pull for an experimental site that didn’t think it would
amount to much. 1997 marked the era when former professor Brent PD
Scott unleashed his vision of madness unto the world.

As the $ grew so did the quality of models, their paychecks and the
acts of perversity. An on hand metal expert would tirelessly create
elaborate gadgets from scratch to provide props for the staged acts.
Each actress was required to sign documentation, and video interview
that they were full aware of all the content to be carried out. A safe
word was given to stop the shoot (if need be) and a certain amount of
bruising was expected.

Not all stuck around but many went on to become regular models who
endured severe torture acts for the public. With extreme safety
precautions in place, the precautionary measures were expressed to be
almost anal at times making sure that this kind of environment wouldn’t
associate itself with any kinds of mistreatment, abuse or kidnapping
(that was non-consenting). It was a literal showcase of hellish visions
performed live that at its heart was just “business as usual”.

The film succeeds in shock but also welcomes a perspective that has
the various performances accompanied by behind the scene interviews and
preparation shots taking some of the mental steam out of the visuals.
In fact, as they carefully prepare and test, its apparent that the
models are acting “torment” for the camera but more relaxed in between
takes. Quite a contrast. It’s sort of like finding out that Wrestling
is mostly fake when your eyes tell you something else. A clear moment
of darkness seems to be just enough to pull all the underground seekers
out of hiding though to enage and marvel for their weekly fix.

The movie contains plenty of full nudity, torture situations,
screaming, weird contractions, gadgets and bondage extremes but it’s
all consenting with the participants being paid extremely well ($300 a
hour). A bonus to the production is that they were able to gather up
most of the models used in the sets to comment on tape and interview
about the experience long afterwards. I wasn’t familiar with the site
when it was in full force but it’s apparent that the man they call PD,
the creator and founder was a guilty pleasure genius. A retired
teacher, PD created this environment first as an experiment before it
blossomed into a full fledge psycho watch.

Even a simple factor as the “number of subscribers” further instills
the huge interest in the perverse and bizarre. It’s pretty clear to me
that alot of what you see in the film will be a first for your eyes. It
does it though in a way that is supported by the reactional factor and
then broken apart like a magician revealing his secrets. One of the
best documentaries on the subject I’ve seen. Everyone….. whether they
approve or not deserves to get a new perspective on the inner workings
of extreme filmmaking for the internet. Ballsy, provocative and stone
cold hardcore. “Graphic Sexual Horror” will pull you into a world you
never knew existed!

Graphic Sexual Horror

Pain.  What motivates people to inflict pain on others?  On
themselves?  These questions are among the many which are asked
in Barbara Bell and Anna Lorentzo's probing documentary,
Graphic Sexual Horror
.  The documentary explores pain to the
absolute extreme by recounting the story of Brent Scott, known
as "PD", and the inception and eventual destruction of Insex.com,
his extremely hardcore BDSM website.  It opens by introducing
Brent as an artist with a deep, lifelong fascination in BDSM.
Brent's hauntingly photographed school films and artwork are
shown in graphic detail.  His amateur work morphed into the
creation of Insex.com.  In 1997, his unique, taboo-breaking
vision was online.  Little did Brent know how largely profitable
Insex would become.  Even in its early stages, he was earning
far more money than he ever received teaching for the art
department at Carnegie-Mellon.  Soon afterwards, people began to
notice Brent and his infamous website which eventually had
nearly 35000 subscribers in the end.

As an unwavering behind-the-scenes look, Graphic Sexual
Horror
delves into the dark complexity of sexual
gratification.  You can say what you want about the site and why
you don't agree with it.  Everyone has their own opinions, but
at the end of the day Brent received a written consent by the
models who starred in his bondage videos and live feeds.  The
filmmakers interview many different models, who worked for
Brent.  Featuring such bondage models as Princess Donna and
Lorelei Lee, they tell of how they got into BDSM and their first
encounter with Brent.  Brent himself is the prime subject here,
and he is a fascinating subject who warrants the attention.  He
has a grand vision and he desires to please his viewers, who log
into his site and pay with their credit cards.  During the live
feeds, his customers even text in their requests on what they
would very much like to see.  In the longest footage from one of
the Insex shoots, Brent slaps a model in the face at a viewer's
request.  She looks extremely pissed at him, perplexed and
shocked.  Apparently, she expressed beforehand she did not wish
to be slapped.  It was her "limit".  The footage is a power play
of the two.  There is a lot going on here which is very
fascinating.  Brent may have forgotten this was her limit, but
he tells her she can quit, at any time if she utters the "safe
word".  And of course, the model who simply cries and does not
quit as Brent suggests.

The documentary later reveals what happens to models if they did
say their safe word.  They would never be called back for
another shoot, and we realize why they wouldn't quit a scene:
Money.  The shoots paid incredibly well, and some models would
even get paid 4,000 dollars a shoot at one time.  Money is the
overall motivator in this world of pornography.  People will do
anything they have to do if they are strapped for cash, and it
is graphically portrayed here.  In the most explicit moments
where models are crying and pleading, we ask: Why don't you
quit?  But it's deeper, more complicated.  There is no way we
can probe their minds -- we don't know what is going on in their
head at the time, and some of us are not in their shoes to ask
their motivation or judge them.  At no point does it judge its
subjects.  This is a frank, honest investigation into Insex.com
and the colorful, interesting people who were involved in it.

For those unaware, Insex.com was shut down by the US government
through the anti-terrorist Patriot Act.  The government claimed
that extreme bondage sites fund terrorism.  This is very
interesting and deserved more time devoted to it in this
documentary.  I strongly believe the filmmakers should've delved
deeper into it.  The documentary briefly talks about the reason
why it was shut down towards the end of its run time, but it's
given approximately four minutes and that's it.  Disappointing,
yet there may not be much more to say about it.  Regardless, it
is in this respect that Graphic Sexual Horror is
important in the way it makes the viewers think about censorship
and freedom of speech.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Graphic Sexual Horror
was the brief mention of serial killers.  Surely, much of
Brent's disturbing imagery would arouse and titillate the worst
sexual serial killer in a variety of ways.  I thought of Ted
Bundy's final interview with James Dobson, where he's comparing
hardcore pornography to an addiction.  He describes how once you
become addicted to pornography, you later seek out the rougher,
more graphic material.  Notorious serial murderers and sex
sadists like Bundy would look at hardcore bondage imagery to
fuel their dark desires and homicidal urges whereas Brent Scott
and others look at their inventions as "art".  Their inventions
are fantasy.  Barbara Bell & Anna Lorentzo, in their feature
debut, depict BDSM as an entirely consensual practice between
responsible adults.  Hence making Graphic Sexual Horror
an unblinking exploration into a world where artistic and sexual
limits are pushed to the maximum.

Not for the easily offended or the squeamish, Graphic Sexual
Horror
assaults the senses.  Even with its startling
visuals, we truly cannot take our eyes off the screen as we hear
the piercingly loud screams of terror and as we watch in awe,
disbelief and horror.  Synapse Films bravely present the
award-winning documentary to DVD in a crystal clear 16x9
transfer.  Supplemental material includes deleted scenes,
additional interviews with the models and one with Barbara Bell,
one of the creators of the documentary.  One of the deleted
scenes, include a model with an extreme foot fetish whose wish
is granted by Insex.com.  She is brought to tears afterwards,
absolutely grateful her fantasy was finally made into a reality
by the Insex team.  To the viewer, the foot torture looks
absolutely painful yet to the model, it was brought instant
pleasure.  A moment in her life in which she will never forget.

GRAPHIC SEXUAL HORROR

Review
by

Troy Howarth

SNEAK
PREVIE
10, 2010

   The
extreme fetish website insex.com once attracted a paying membership
of 35,000 — until its shocking content got it in trouble with
the Department of Homeland Security, who ultimately shut the operation
down...

Every
now and again, a title emerges which is both eye catching and
true to its subject — Graphic Sexual Horror
is one such title. This documentary sheds light on Brent "PD"
Scott, a former professor at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University
(alma mater of George A. Romero), who switched careers and became
a purveyor of extremely rough S&M pornography. PD achieved lasting
infamy with his website insex.com, which provided interactive
fetish, bondage and sadomasochistic streaming videos to an eager
subsection of the public.

The
amazing thing about the documentary is its nonjudgmental tone.
While many filmmakers would have used this as an opportunity to
denounce its subject, directors Barbara Bell and Anna Lorentzon
have no such agenda on their plate. Rather, it goes into its subject
with palpable enthusiasm — showing both its positive and negative
elements, and allowing the audience to make up their own mind
based on their own standards and social mores. Make no mistake,
there's some very graphic and disturbing imagery on display...
but as PD would be the first to admit, that's the whole point.
One is left with an impression of the S&M aesthetic as an extension
of the old-school Grand Guignol theatrical scene. By plunging
into the depths of some of the most off-the-wall sexual fantasies,
PD and his actresses provided an outlet for eager viewers, one
which enabled them to feel as if they weren't alone after all.

Bell
and Lorentzon keep things flowing at a good pace, and the end
result is undeniably effective, even if the material itself is
destined to be off-putting for many viewers. PD and his stable
of fetish actresses tend to come off as surprisingly intelligent,
with an intellectual approach to their art. The flipside is represented,
however, by the sad, burnt-out visage of one of PD's former flings
— a fetish actress known as "101" whose porn career supported
a drug habit; addiction has since gotten the better of her, and
one can't help but feel pity watching her as she rambles through
mostly incoherent monologues about her past experiences. However,
lest the tone come off as preachy or condescending, there's more
than ample face time given to such proud, intelligent and photogenic
fetish actresses as Lorelei Lee, "912," and Nina — all of whom
provide fascinating insight into the thought process behind their
work. As for PD, he runs the gamut from likable to repulsive —
memorably pushing an Asian actress too far in one scene, while
showing an almost paternal concern for his actresses at other
points. One is left in little doubt that, for better or worse,
he is a serious artist. Whether one sympathizes with what he does
is almost irrelevant, as the point of the film isn't so much to
validate his art so much as it is to draw attention to it.

Ultimately,
the film achieves its goal artfully, without any editorializing
or sermonizing from the filmmakers. Bell and Lorentzon allow
their subjects to speak for themselves, and there is no voice-over
narration to fill in the gaps or get in the way. The subject
matter is undeniably disturbing at times, but one can also appreciate
the passion and intensity of the people involved; one doesn't
need to agree with them in order to admire them for being honest
about pursuing their dreams. The end result is in many respects
far more engrossing than one might anticipate; it's certainly
worth a viewing
.

Graphic
Sexual Horror

hits DVD in this fine edition from Synapse. The 1.85/16x9 transfer
looks superb. Detail is razor sharp, colors are accurately rendered,
and the film is presented completely uncensored. The stereo soundtrack
is very punchy indeed

dialogue comes through loud and clear, and the glimpses of PD's
kinky bondage footage is replete with screams of the earsplitting
variety. Extras include some brief cut scenes, extended actress
interviews (the bit with a fetish actress who requests a particularly
brutal foot torture sequence, only to break down in tears afterward

not out of pain but because somebody has finally given her what
she's wanted for so long

is especially memorable), a theatrical trailer and an interview
with co-director Barbara Bell.

Graphic Sexual Horror DVD review on Sins of Cinema

Synapse Films unleashes the Slamdance Film Festival knockout Graphic Sexual Horror, a documentary on one of the most depraved and revolutionary websites in history, www.INSEX.com

FILM-
Insex.com, one of the first BDSM sites on the web. Founded in 1997 by
Brent Scott (known as PD on the site), it revolutionized "violent porn"
as we know it. Disturbing, graphic, and groundbreaking, INSEX managed
to accumulate over 35,000 members, all paying $60 a month to enjoy it's
sadistic content. After severe bullying by the Federal Government,
INSEX was forced to shut down in 2005.

"Warning!
Graphic Sexual Horror"- before entering INSEX, you had to pass this
warning screen. Inside, PD had created a a beautiful horror show. Women
with needles stabbed through their nipples, held underwater in dunk
tanks, rigged to orgasm machines, crying, bleeding, and loving it. It
all began when Brent PD Scott (who describes his early experiences with
bondage in the film) created his own Sado-Masochistic website, hoping
to bring the subject into American culture. A former teacher at
Carnegie Mellon, Scott left with this message- "if you won't allow me
to teach your children, I will corrupt them".

You
see, documentaries are always a tricky thing to review, and Graphic
Sexual Horror is no exception. In a nutshell, it's a reminiscent on
INSEX before it was hijacked by "Big Brother". Interviews include PD,
other site workers (many of whom have started their own sites like
Hogtied.com and Kink.com), the builder who made Scott's visions
reality, and the models. Tons of site footage (much of it never before
seen) is shown, and the interviewees talk about the decline of INSEX,
and how their experiences there affected them. As far as "plot" goes,
that's essentially this movie, but it's much deeper than that.

Like
I said, documentaries are tricky, because nothing is face value. I
can't describe how profound this movie is. From the naked body, bruised
and crunched into a rusty cage, to the reason why she is there. It's
not just an interview, it's an eye opening moment. The top reasons for
being an INSEX model were sexual fulfillment, genuine sexual pleasure,
or money, a gluttonous greed. It's amazing to see one women remember
the orgasms she received through the abuse, and another remember that
she went on a shopping spree after her shoot.

Graphic
Sexual Horror is not a movie about bondage, but a document on INSEX.
It's nothing like an exploitation film, so don't go into this expecting
a Jess Franco flick. It's mature, respectful, and open minded. Aside
from showing how INSEX revolutionized the internet porn business, it
also shows that humans are going to do what they want, for the reasons
they want, and no force on earth can stop them (aside from their own
laziness).

Documentaries
are designed to be eye opening, and when the credits roll, you should
have taken something with you. Graphic Sexual Horror is one hell of a
successful film. It's enlightening, beautiful (one scene involving
snow, and another involving singing were almost uplifting to me),
shocking, and eye opening. This film really shows human nature, and how
pleasure is not the same to everyone. It's sad, to see the old set,
it's cages covered in cobwebs, and the shackles strewn across the
floor. The death of INSEX was not the end of bondage or violent porn,
just the end of a man's vision and hard work. That's more disturbing
than anything consenting people do for enjoyment. 10/10.

PICTURE/ AUDIO-
The reason INSEX was so popular was the raw, rough look of their videos
and live feeds. All the archived footage is presented un-altered, and
the interviews are shot on a high quality camera. In short, every frame
of this movie is fitting to it's mood. 9/10.

Audio
is just like the picture. On the interviews, everything is clear and
polished, but the website footage is rough and raw sounding. Screaming,
crying, moaning, it's all there- and it's all super loud. Volume is not
an issue here, and everything fits it's on screen counterpart. 9/10.

EXTRAS- Synapse
has included multiple deleted scenes including an alternate ending and
alternate montage that are as chilling as they are amazing, additional
interview scenes with the models, a featurette with co director Barbara
Bell, and the trailer. The movie it's self is a must own, and with
these extras you'll have no problem adding Graphic Sexual Horror to
your collection. 8/10.

This film will be released August 10th from Synapse Films!
